A vet has revealed his top tips on how he's helping his own dog feel less anxious when he's not at home, and how to best tackle it.

Research suggests that 8 out of 10 dogs struggle to cope when left alone. However, half of these pups won't show any obvious signs and so it can be easy for owners to miss, the RSPCA reports. So how do you know if your dog has it? The most common signs of separation-related behaviours in dogs are destructive behaviour, howling, barking or whining, and being excessively excited upon your return. Some less common behaviours might also include not eating, repetitive behaviour (such as circling or barking), and panting.

Fortunately there are ways you can help your pet feel more at ease when left alone. Taking to TikTok, a veterinarian named Amir Anwary revealed how he tackles separation anxiety with his own dog.

"Generally, when we leave our home, that's usually the worst part of their day," Amir explained. "They love being around us, they love us, and when we're gone, they generally don't like that."

He went on to say that every time you leave your home, they get sad. and every time you do your routine when you leave your home, such as saying goodbye to your dog in the same way or putting your shoes on in the same way, they start to build that sadness and anxiety before you've even left your home.

"What makes it even worse is that when you get back home, you're super excited," Amir explained, noting that pet owners typically bring an abundance of enthusiasm to greet their dogs that's absent during regular daily interactions.

This creates a situation where the highlight of your dog's entire day becomes your return home with all that joyful energy after hours apart.

Consequently, your departure becomes particularly distressing for your pet, as that time in between turns into 'psychological torture', according to Amir. So what can you do to ease your dog's stress and anxiety whilst you're away?

To help his own pooch cope better and reduce anxiety during his absence, Amir revealed he'd begun changing up his daily routine when leaving the house.

He explained he'd previously used the 'stay' command to prevent his dog from following him out. However, this led to the animal becoming distressed whenever that instruction was given.

As a result, he stopped using this command and also eliminated any other triggers that were causing his pet's anxiety.

Upon your return home, Amir also advised removing the emotion and avoiding excited or energetic behaviour towards your dog, so they cease linking your homecoming with the heightened joy they anticipate.

Instead, Amir suggested being more animated and affectionate with your dog consistently throughout the day, ensuring they don't connect this energy exclusively with your arrival home.
