A row over modern stained-glass windows for Notre Dame cathedral has been reignited after the Paris authorities approved the installation of the work by an Anglo-French artist.

Claire Tabouret's modern depictions of Pentecost scenes will replace the existing windows in six of the seven chapels along the south aisle of the nave.
The designs were chosen in 2024 by a jury mindful of President Macron's plan to leave a "mark of the 21st century" on the restored Gothic cathedral following its near destruction in a fire in 2019.
The existing windows, whose geometric, mainly monochrome floral patterns were designed by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, who restored the cathedral in the mid-19th century, survived the fire and have been cleaned. Opponents are asking the courts to annul the building permit issued by the Paris prefecture that authorises the immediate removal of Viollet-le-Duc's windows and clears the path to replace them with Tabouret's work in December.
Campaigners have gathered 335,000 signatories in a petition to block the project and are appealing against a court ruling against an earlier suit. They are accusing Macron and the government of cultural vandalism by removing undamaged windows to impose contemporary art on the medieval building.
Julien Lacaze, head of Sites and Monuments, the group rallying opposition to the project, said the state was breaching the 1964 Venice Charter, the international convention on preserving historic heritage.
"Every artistic or historical element of a listed monument must be preserved," he said. "Viollet-le-Duc was not merely a restorer of the cathedral but a creator. His work is listed and holds significant heritage interest."
The state, which owns France's churches, overruled opposition to the installation from a committee of the culture ministry and also from the influential Académie des Beaux-Arts.
Supporters of the project say the 19th-century windows are not part of the building's original fabric and point out that Notre Dame has incorporated contemporary art over the centuries. This includes 12 large stained-glass windows in abstract 20th-century style, designed in 1966 by Jacques le Chevallier.
Tabouret, 44, who has just returned to France after 14 years in Los Angeles, said she was undaunted by the controversy. "My mother is English, my father French — two close countries where making fun of the one across the way is a national sport," she told Le Monde in December. "Since childhood, I've wanted to bring people together to say, 'Wait, I'll explain to you what the other side is like.'"
Full-size models of her 6 metre-high windows, each made up of about 50 pieces of coloured glass, were well received by visitors when they went on show in the Paris Grand Palais for three months at the start of the year. They are being manufactured by Atelier Simon-Marq, a glass workshop in Reims that has worked with artists including Marc Chagall and Joan Miró.
More than 16 months since its reopening, up to 35,000 people visit Notre Dame every day.
