Three hikers, including two foreigners, were killed and ten were missing after a volcano on Indonesia's eastern Halmahera island erupted on Friday, spewing a large ash cloud into the air, a local police chief said.

The cloud from Mount Dukono rose some ten kilometres (6.2 miles) from the summit following the eruption.

"There are three dead, two foreigners and one resident of Ternate (an island in east Indonesia)," police chief Erlichson Pasaribu of North Halmahera province told Kompas TV. He told reporters the two foreigners were from Singapore.
