A 16-year-old Hong Kong resident has reportedly died after falling from a snow-covered mountain in Sichuan province, China, on Monday (June 30).

据报道，周一（6月30日），一名16岁的香港居民在中国四川省一座积雪覆盖的山上坠亡。

According to Sing Tao Daily, the teen, surnamed Zhou, was on the second peak — at an altitude of 5,276 meters — of the Siguniang Mountain Scenic Area in Sichuan province when he fell, reportedly due to weakness in his legs.

据《星岛日报》报道，这名周姓少年 当时正在四川省四姑娘山风景名胜区海拔5276米的第二峰上， 据称因腿部无力而坠落。

The incident was said to have occurred around 8 am.

A video circulating online and aired by Hong Kong's TVB News appeared to show a person — purportedly the teenager — sliding down the snow-covered slope before disappearing from view, while others on the climb watched helplessly.

香港TVB新闻播出的一段网上流传的视频显示，一名据称是该少年的男子从积雪覆盖的山坡上滑下，随后消失在视线中， 而其他登山者只能无助地看着。

The boy's body was later recovered by rescuers in the afternoon, according to local authorities and media outlets.

An official notice from the Siguniang Mountain Scenic Administration stated that the deceased was a Hong Kong resident living in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, reported the South China Morning Post.

His parents had reportedly signed up him for the outdoor activity organised by a travel agency.

In a post on social media, a netizen had stated that shortly before the accident, the guide had untied the connecting rope and was searching for his backpack when Zhou suddenly experienced weakness in his legs and slipped from the steep path.

一名网友在社交媒体上发帖称，事故发生前不久， 向导解开了连接绳索，正在寻找自己的背包，此时周姓少年突然腿部无力，从陡峭的山路上滑落。

"Siguniang is not a mountain one can climb just because you have legs," wrote the netizen.

South China Morning Post reported on July 2 that the family of the deceased had arrived in Chengdu, and authorities are providing assistance. According to a tourist information website for Mount Siguniang, also known as the Four Sisters Mountain or the "Chinese Alps", the mountain range is suitable for mountaineering, trekking, camping, hiking and other outdoor activities.
