Passengers are facing travel chaos this evening with a fire near a London station forcing services to be suspended.

Images from the scene on Cottrill Gardens, close to Hackney Central, showed huge flames and thick black smoke billowing into the air. Cars along with a caravan and embankment were all ablaze as well as sheds and there was damage to terraced housing, said the London Fire Brigade.

Around 60 firefighters tackled the blaze after racing to the scene around 6.10pm with crews coming from Homerton, Leyton, Whitechapel and surrounding stations.

The latest updates from Transport for London says the continues to be severe delays on the Weaver Line and there is no service between Stratford and Gospel Oak on the Mildmay Line.

An update from the fire service says the blaze was brought under control by 8.42pm and an investigation is now underway into the cause while there are no reports of injuries.

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield, who attended the scene, said: "Firefighters worked hard in hot weather to tackle this fire in Hackney.

"The fire affected a static caravan, two scrap cars and a 25 metre embankment along a train line, as well as three sheds and some fencing. The travel disruption continues with National Rail stating: "A fire next to the track at Hackney Downs means that all lines are disrupted. As a result, trains running between London Liverpool Street and Seven Sisters / Tottenham Hale may be cancelled or delayed by up to 20 minutes."

The Greater Anglia service from Liverpool Street to Audley End is also impacted, as is the station's service north to Enfield Town.
