Factory activity in New York State grew strongly in August, according to the latest monthly edition of the Empire State Manufacturing Survey.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York said that its statewide manufacturing index of business conditions rose to 20.6, its highest reading in four years. A consensus of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had expected a reading of 12.

The number of employees index was 9.3, slightly less than the last reading. However, the average workweek index rose to 6.9, suggesting an ongoing expansion of employment levels and hours worked.
